Willemstad - Curaçao Clean Up together with the Curaçao Dive Task Force of CHATA and Sea Turtle Conservation organized a special clean-up on "Klein Curaçao" in support of the upcoming turtle nesting season.
This event was organized on April 21st in honor of Earth Day.
Each year on Earth Day, people all over the world organize several events to increase awareness about the importance of environmental protection. This year Curaçao Clean Up together with the Curaçao Dive Task Force of CHATA and Sea Turtle Conservation partnered up for the benefit of turtle conservation on Curaçao. Curaçao is registering a worrisome decline in turtles. Turtles are an important member of our ecosystem and have a great touristic value for our island. Therefore, these organizations decided to focus their efforts in cleaning one of the important nesting grounds of our turtles just in time for nesting season.
The efforts of the clean-up team at Klein Curaçao were focused on removing debris on land as well as from the water. In addition to this, the team was also able to collect funds for the Fish Line Collector Project whose aim is to remove fish lines and hooks from the ocean, a major threat for sea turtles. Funds were collected by hunting for and selling Lionfish.
The collected debris was transported to Curaçao where they will be properly processed and disposed of. This initiative was a collective effort of various organizations such as Breezes, Ocean Encounters, Curious2Dive, Curacao Clean Up, Blue Finn Charters (Black and White) Dive versity, Coca Cola, Mermaid and Sea Turtle Conservation. A special thanks goes out to the sponsors of the clean up event White Tip, Coca Cola and LB constructie.
