WILLEMSTAD - May 22 to 24, Edwin Baas from the Curacao Boxing Association CuraBox was in St. Lucia for participation in the ITO course of the international boxing association AIBA.

thumbnail ITO instructor Angel Villarreal USA with Edwin BaasTo ensure that Competition Officials are up to date with the latest Rules, AIBA has set up the ITO (International Technical Official) program to train and certify officials. It aims to ensure that all AIBA officials are knowledgeable about the rules, that they can make the right decisions during AIBA Competitions and maintain fair play and neutrality for the benefit of all competitors.

In addition to Curacao and host country St. Lucia, Barbados, Bahamas, Jamaica, Guyana, Dominica, Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda and Cayman Islands participated. The course was led by Angel Villarreal (USA) and the exams consisted of 3 parts; a practical exam, a written exam and an oral exam. The results will only be announced after 3 weeks, but Baas is convinced that he has passed, although he found the exams not easy.

For Curacao, which as a country and organization has only recently become an official member of AIBA (since November last year), participation in it was of great importance. Not only because of expertise promotion, but also that we as Curacao take boxing and our AIBA membership seriously.

The AIBA technical & competition rules have recently undergone changes. Edwin Baas will now transfer the acquired knowledge to our referees, judges, timekeepers, trainers/coaches, boxers and everybody involved in amateur boxing.

This Saturday, June 1st, amateur boxing bouts will take place from 6 til 9 PM in Sala Niels Liberia Suffisant. Boxers from Aruba, Bonaire, Sint Maarten and various local teams will participate. CuraBox is very grateful to FDOK for the financial support they receive to make the activities possible.
